Maybe things didn’t work out as planned. Maybe you’ve been in a slump lately. Maybe you have never had it all under control to begin with. Regardless of where you’re coming from, here’s a little life organization manual to get you where you want to be.
- Make a list. Start small, and write down 3 things that need to get done this week. Then, add two thing’s you’d like to finish within the next month. These can be goals or simply to-do items, but either way putting them in writing (or typing) will make them more likely to actually happen.
- Use a calendar. My favorite app is called Sunrise and it works for your Desktop, iPad, iPhone, and Android. Now place the items you listed above in the calendar, assigning appropriate due dates and reminders to ensure they are completed. Merge all your schedules/obligations into this one location, and follow religiously.
- Be good to your body. Take care of any necessary health-related tasks that have not yet been attended to. Are you in need of a haircut? Did you do something active this week? Have you been eating well? Did you shower today? How much sleep did you get last night? These may seem unrelated to getting your shit together but I promise that treating your body well is crucial for high performance!
- Fill up the trash. Rid your email inbox of clutter, donate the 40% of your wardrobe that hasn’t been touched since 2008, put away the piles of junk you have accumulated on your bedroom desk and kitchen counter. Life feels so much better when you don’t have all that baggage weighing you down.
- Clean. Never underestimate the power of Clorox wipes and a vacuum cleaner. If you take some time to clean your surroundings, you will feel more focused and productive in other aspects of your life.
- Add to your social calendar. If you don’t already have something on your calendar for the next week, make a plan! Visiting with friends will not only motivate and uplift you, it will actually serve as something to work toward while you are busy conquering the world. No matter how driven you want to be, time to enjoy yourself is needed to maintain a healthy life balance.
- Smile. Even if things aren’t perfect yet, you’re headed in the right direction. Positivity will get you so much further in life, have faith!
I’d love to hear your story. Feel free to leave comments about what has (or hasn’t) worked for you. Best wishes as you embark on this personal journey! XOXO.
I relate to this post more than I can convey in words. Reading this, I wanted to throw my hands up and yell, “YES!!!!!” But then my colleagues would know I was blogging at work, right?
Anyway, the last year has been utterly chaotic for me: married, new baby, new job, bought a house. Literally everything has changed. I managed it decently well (aside from the PPD) by following many of your strategies. I rid myself of clutter, both physical and virtual. I am loyal to my calendar and my lists.
One thing you didn’t mention was seeking out help. It’s tough for many of us to seek help when we need it, but it’s important to at least list it as an option. Whether it’s a professional cleaning service, a friend to look at your resume, a loan…we all need a little help sometimes!
My blog is my story of the 2015 madness. I would love to reblog this, if it’s ok with you!

Thanks for the insight CassieW! That is absolutely wonderful advice. Seeking help is so important, as we cannot always manage stress alone. I am so glad you shared that :).
And, OF COURSE you are welcome to reblog this–thanks for asking!! (I’d be thrilled if you linked my page on the post as well if possible! XOXO<3)

When I saw the name “choosing cheerful” I didn’t expect the first post I happen to see to be “get your shit together” but it was exactly what I needed this morning! Hahaha. Thanks for showing an interest in my blog and I plan to check out “sunrise”. A lot of what you have here is not only ways to get it together but tactics for managing life with depression and anxiety. These are some of the tricks I use myself!

Ah thank you for stopping by, and this insightful comment. I will admit, my blog’s name probably suggests a more innocent writer (for lack of a better word), but I fully intend to surprise you all by my posts. I hope you like Sunrise, be sure to let me know what you think. Also, I’m so glad these tactics are helpful for your life and several other instances as well… We owe it to one another to be a beacon of hope and positivity in this world! ❤

Yes hunny, this is right on! I think my biggest issue has been believing in the illusion of “having it all together”. It creates too much pressure and leaves little room to breathe and to grow into who I really am and what I’m capable of. Thank you for sharing this; it’s a great reminder to start the day! Oh, and it’s a great reminder that none of us are alone in this alone!

You are very welcome. I am glad you appreciate it, we often do put too much pressure on ourselves and I hope you feel that it is an aid to feel less stressed and not a thing that causes additional stress. You are capable of so much!

Social calendar! Too often people fall into a spiral of “I never do anything because no one ever asks me”. Well – maybe no one is asking you to do anything because you don’t ask them!

Ha ha…really the guide is helpfull but…for me is everytime diferent. Like some days I have a plan to follow, and the next time I change it. But most of it, works to organize and think think think :))
We should write about “a evil plan to get your shit together” :)))
